All the 22 different conditions in this group involve abuse of or addiction to various psychoactive drugs. Among the symptoms listed for alcohol dependence are drinking in larger amounts or for a longer period of time than intended and an inability to stop drinking.
Cocaine abuse is described as continued use of the drug for at least one month though the user knows that it is causing social, occupational, psychological, or physical problems. Substance abusers also frequently use a drug in dangerous situations, for i.e. while driving a car. DSM-III-R suggests a distinction between dependence (mild, moderate, or severe) and abuse. Also remission may be partial (some dependence) or full (no dependence)
