Soma is the Greek word for “body”. This category covers physical illnesses or complaints, such as pain or nausea that have no identifiable physical cause. In all seven somatoform disorders are recognized. Typical is hypochondria, the fear (lasting at least six months) of having a serious disease, despite medical assurance to the contrary. In somatoform pain disorder, a person feels pain for which doctors can find no appropriate physical cause.
